What is Woodturning?

Like a potter will use a potter’s wheel to create a bespoke piece from clay, a woodturner will produce a unique wooden item using a wood lathe. This device holds a block of timber in place, spinning it rapidly whilst our carpenters use hand-held tools to carve shapes and designs into the wood.

From these single blocks of wood, we can produce the most beautiful items for our Guildford clients, such as:

  • Candlesticks

  • Chair Seats

  • Decorative Bowls

  • Handles and Knobs

  • Newel Posts

  • Pens and Bespoke Gifts

  • Platters and Dishes

  • Staircase Spindles

  • Table and Chair Legs

  • Vases and Urns

With our team at iwoodcreate sharing over 60 years of combined experience between us, we’ve accumulated a range of woodturning tools which have plenty of history in every blade and handle. Depending on the project in hand, we’ll use the following:

Roughing Gouge

Used at the start of a job, this will transform the original block of wood into a cylindrical shape.

Skew Chisel

This is chosen by our bespoke carpenters when a smooth finish or specific vee cuts are required.

Spindle Gouge

Specifically for creating beads, we use this gouge for chair and table legs and staircase spindles.

Round Nose Scraper

Another tool used for spindle work, this scraper also hollows out bowls, vases, and wide dishes.

Bowl Gouge

We initially use this particular gouge to create unique bowl shapes before we start carving the inside.

Parting Tool

Towards the end of the woodturning process, we’ll use this to create finer details before finishing.

We don’t just see timber blocks in our workshop; our team at iwoodcreate sees potential. From the small offcut, we can create beautiful works of art that will suit any property in Guildford or the surrounding areas. Whether you like contemporary installations or classic designs, our bespoke carpenters will work closely with you to ensure we achieve the results you’re looking for.
