Traditional Materials in Conservation Practice

The conservation of historic buildings often requires more than simply selecting a paint system. Successful long-term preservation depends upon understanding how traditional materials work together as part of a wider building system.
Materials such as:
  • Linseed Oil

  • Pine Tar

  • Oakum

  • Traditional Putties

  • Lime Mortars

  • Natural Oils

  • Historic Timber Species

Understanding how these materials interact allows us to ensure repairs remain compatible with the historic building fabric whilst supporting long-term performance.

Linseed Oil Paint

Linseed oil paint is a traditional paint system manufactured primarily from boiled linseed oil and natural pigments. Unlike many modern paint systems, linseed paint penetrates and nourishes timber rather than forming a rigid surface film. This allows the timber to remain protected whilst continuing to respond naturally to seasonal movement and changes in moisture.
Its long history of use throughout Europe demonstrates its effectiveness as a protective coating during historic window restoration and for doors, timber frames and traditional joinery.

Pine Tar and Traditional Timber Protection

Pine tar has been used for centuries as a protective treatment for timber structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions.
Traditionally used throughout Northern Europe on timber buildings, agricultural structures, gates, fences and maritime timberwork, pine tar offers a durable and breathable method of protecting timber whilst allowing moisture movement within the material.
Benefits include:
  • Water-Shedding Properties

  • Breathable Protection

  • Traditional Appearance

  • Compatibility with Historic Timber

  • Long Service Life

  • Ease of Maintenance

Pine tar remains particularly relevant where a traditional protective finish is required and forms part of the wider understanding of traditional timber preservation methods.
As part of our heritage consultancy and repair services in and across Hampshire, our heritage carpenters will advise on the best solution for your building.

Oakum and Traditional Weatherproofing

Oakum has historically been used as a flexible natural fibre material in timber and masonry construction. Traditionally formed from natural fibres treated with protective oils or tar, it was often used to seal gaps, accommodate movement and reduce water penetration while remaining compatible with traditional building materials.
Within building conservation, oakum can still provide a useful solution where traditional methods are appropriate and compatible with the building.
Applications include:
  • Historic Window Restoration

  • Traditional Joinery Repairs

  • Weatherproofing Gaps in Timber Construction

  • Addressing Localised Water Ingress

  • Flexible Packing in Historic Joints

  • Traditional Masonry Repairs

In some traditional masonry repairs, oakum can be carefully packed into joints or voids before being finished with traditional putty and lime mortar. This helps reduce water penetration and accommodate minor movement within the structure, while maintaining compatibility with the historic materials.
Oakum can also provide a traditional solution for addressing localised draughts and water ingress whilst respecting the original construction methods of window joinery.
As with all conservation repairs, suitability depends upon the individual building, the nature of the defect and the conservation objectives of the project.
